This
multimedia resource was created by a group of teacher students at the division
of Teacher Education at SALCC. This video is an instrument used to facilitate
learning. It was created with the purpose to aid in teaching a Health Science
lesson on bad hygienic practices and its effects. The video is an easy tool
that teachers can use to teach and foster students’ learning. Furthermore, the
use of video can be lucrative in the endeavour to develop students’
understanding of personal hygiene, support content already available in
students’ texts, and expose students to new ways of looking at the concept.
What was created?
It
is a six minute video showing the story of Lester engaging in some unhygienic
practices that resulting in him having to visit the doctor. In the video,
effects, transitions, images and voice overs were used to evoke the correct
emotional response from students.
How it was created (software used)?
The
program Corel Studio Pro x3 was used in the production of the video. YouTube
was also used to gather sound effects.
Why was it created/how is it useful in
instruction?
The
video was created as a tool to evoke the right emotional responses about personal
hygiene. Its intended purpose was also to teach students what practices are the
most hygienic as they might be misguided or unaware of what they should do. It
will also reinforce what the parents have taught them with regards to personal
hygiene. The video assists teachers in helping build the students enthusiasm and
also allowing them to discover the information for themselves.
Who will benefit?
The
students and parents will benefit from this resource in addition to parents.
Posting the resource online will make it available to parents to use it at home
with their children and other teachers to utilise in their own classroom.
What are the ways in which it can be
used in instruction?
This video can
be used to introduce the topic; students can view a video at the beginning to
set the paste for the lesson. It can also be used throughout the lesson; the
teacher could use the video throughout the lesson pausing it at certain points
and having discussion with the class. The teacher may also use the video in the
middle of the lesson to help students in understanding a concept. Moreover,
video can be used to conclude a lesson; the teacher can use the video to recap
the main points in the lesson. In addition the video can be used to reinforce
what was taught throughout the lesson.
